Our Reviews

It is difficult to find comprehensive reviews of high quality online. While sites like Harmony-Central have an established repository of user-reviews, one often has to sort the ‘wheat from the chaff’ when reading these reviews. Guitarpug.com aims to provide informative reviews of guitars and related gear, with several key differences:

  1. Because of the wealth of products available to musicians worldwide, it is impossible to produce a review that accurately describes how a product will fare in every single circumstance, so our reviews usually disclose in detail the gear used in testing each product. We also attempt to be as thorough as possible when testing, trying different combinations of guitars and amps with the product using different settings. Where possible we also test the products at a gig to give a real-world evaluation of its performance.
  2. Reviews are conducted in an unbiased manner that highlights the outstanding features of the product and scenarios that the product would be suitable for. We believe that most products are excellent products if used appropriately. A low-gain overdrive pedal would probably not be the best choice for you if all you play is thrash metal.
  3. We do not approach reviews with an adversarial attitude (ie. Product A is better/worse than Product B), but often we will make comparisons to give a clearer description (eg. Product A has more mid-range than Product B).
  4. Another key feature of our reviews is the inclusion of sound and/or video clips. It is more time-consuming to produce, but undeniably more useful than a thousand page description.
  5. We do not subscribe to giving out ratings to products. Tone is subjective. By handing out ratings, we can implicitly force our opinions onto others who do not choose to take the time to completely read through a review, and may result in them making an incorrect judgement.

All this comes together in a package that helps a reader decide for themselves if a product is suitable for them. It can also help an existing owner learn more about their latest acquisition.
